A River Like You

A river like you of such magnitude

runs to every corner

humps, crouches and stretches

to find calm waters

above the entangled root to free itself.

You curve and curl playfully

through tight and narrow paths

to lie on your back

and merge into the sky’s mirror.

When darkness assassinates the moon

you hide her silver under the water

to return to the night’s light keeper.

You are like the river and a river like you

runs through light and mist,

straits and whirls,

where sparrows are fearless on

a free, long flight,

the corn poppies and wallflowers

are banned from growing.

And when you reach an unexpected edge

you fall with grace and dignity.
